Thinkin' and drinkin' are all I have today

November 9, 2016

I believe in reason. I believe in facts. I believe in a shared, underlying reality. I believe in the Enlightenment. I believe women are as smart as men. I believe in listening. I believe that my experience is not the only valid one. I believe in trying to understand another point of view. I believe in changing my mind. I believe it is valuable to admit ignorance.

The issue, of course, is that if you don’t believe in a shared reality, if everything is a partisan position, if you don’t have an open mind, if you cannot challenge your prejudices, if you have no empathy, if you don’t desire informed, inclusive governance, if you jump to conclusions, or if your emotions take control, it may not be possible to free your mind. Irrationality is something you can’t talk yourself out of.

It is apparent that the Democrats were out of touch with the reality of the electorate.

It is apparent that cynical, manipulative, vacuous propaganda can overcome Enlightenment values.

Reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled.
